How to make a perfectly thick and creamy pineapple milkshake at home in just 5 minutes or less. Bright and refreshing tropical dessert that’s perfect for a hot summer day. This recipe is simple and so easy to make!

This pineapple shake brings me back to our days living in Arkansas, when we’d go to Suzie Q’s almost every week as a family to grab our favorite milkshakes. They had all different kinds and flavors, and they were so good. That’s partially what inspired me to try making my own homemade vanilla milkshake, chocolate milkshakes and caramel apple shake, and eventually we started making the best strawberry shakes!

This recipe makes a perfectly thick and creamy pineapple milkshake with a bright, fruity flavor that’ll whisk you away to your own tropical paradise. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point; pineapple milkshakes are just really good, and this recipe is pretty healthy too!

Ingredients & Substitutions Notes

Keep in mind that I use a blender to make this recipe. That said, if you don’t have a blender on hand, you can use the same ingredients from this recipe to make this no blender milkshake recipe

  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream – I like to use vanilla bean ice cream for its stronger vanilla flavor. If you’re making this recipe dairy free, you can use a dairy free vanilla ice cream instead!
  • Pineapple Juice – Because this recipe uses fresh pineapple, I recommend using pineapple juice instead of milk. When fresh pineapple is mixed with milk, the mixture will tend to curdle and can create a bitter flavor due to different enzyme reactions in the fruit. It’s perfectly safe to eat, but it won’t taste good.
  • Vanilla Extract – I always use 100% real vanilla extract for my homemade milkshakes!
  • Fresh Pineapple – Fresh pineapple is always best for the freshest flavor, but you can also use drained, canned pineapple chunks. Frozen pineapple tends to run a little bit dryer– Once thawed, you can use it, but be sure to use a little bit more pineapple juice accordingly.

That’s it! If you want a slightly thicker pineapple milkshake, add some more ice cream. If you’re after a thinner shake, add a little bit more pineapple juice.

How to Serve Your Pineapple Milkshake

Once you’ve reached the desired milkshake consistency, pour your pineapple shake into milkshake glasses. Add a dollop of whipped cream and more pineapple chunks on top, and it’s ready to serve!

Expert Tips and Recipe FAQ’s

What’s the difference between a pineapple milkshake and a pineapple smoothie?

The biggest difference is that milkshakes usually use ice cream as a base, whereas smoothies are primarily composed of blended up fruits and veggies, sometimes including a splash of milk, juice or yogurt.

Why is my pineapple milkshake bitter?

This can happen when fresh pineapple is mixed with milk. There are certain enzymes in fresh pineapple that will break down proteins in the milk, resulting in an undesirable bitter flavor. It’s for this reason that I always use pineapple juice instead of milk for the liquid in this recipe!

Can I make homemade milkshakes ahead of time?

No. Because the ice cream melts, I would wait to make your milkshakes ’til you’re just ready to drink them!
